The Nutritious Life Guide to Cleansing

 

Client after client has walked through my door, hoping that I will be their last stop on the weight loss bus because they’ve “tried everything.”  Take Ava*, for example. You name the diet, she’d done it. Weight Watchers, South Beach, Atkins, raw food. Cabbage soup, gluten free, Paleo. I could go on, but you get it. In between all of this “dieting” Ava would fall into the binge or cleanse cycle. She would diet for a while, fall off the wagon, a slip would become a slide of poor choices and zero effort. She’d beat herself up, then mentally commit that she was going to be successful starting on Monday.

Monday would always start a 5-day juice cleanse, which would then lead to the next diet that was definitely going to work...this time. So, she would choke down the juices until Friday, end that clean slate with a weekend binge of salty, high-fat meals, and then begin her “diet.”

So many of my clients can relate to Ava, but there’s more than one version of this story.

Emily did great on her meal plan, she smiled as she scrambled her eggs in the morning, ate her apple and peanut butter for snack like it was candy, and gave herself a little wink and silent high five as the number on the scale consistently dropped. But, then, the urge to take it up a notch just got too strong. So, before a vacation (though a wedding or some other major event has been the trigger for others), she dove head first into a juice cleanse.

After a few days of swampy green juices, not a bite to chew and ridiculous amounts of funds spent at the healthfood store on the corner, Emily found herself with that same familiar feeling… that feeling that she couldn’t take one more sip. She was “starving” but the thought of drinking one more thing, anything, especially green, made her want to, well, vomit. If you’ve ever done a juice cleanse you may know this feeling well.

Emily got to her vaca feeling fantastic and amazed at how great she thought she looked.
