Y7 Yoga has been taking over the fitness scene (and your Instagram feed) since it held its first hip-hop hot vinyasa class in 2013.
There are now seven studios open across New York City and Los Angeles (including a brand new flagship in Williamsburg) and two more set to debut before the end of 2017. Celebs love it, too: Show up for a WeFlowHard session and you might be sweating next to regulars like Zosia Mamet.
A big part of Y7’s appeal comes from the fact that the tough, fun approach to yoga feels fresh and honest, tailored to fit the lives and preferences of busy Millennials. In other words, it doesn’t take itself too seriously: combining a spiritual practice with Drake and Chance the Rapper beats? Why not?
And that attitude is obviously due in part to co-founder Sarah Levey’s easygoing personality. Below, she shares her relaxed, real approach to healthy living: kale and tomatoes, sure, but also pizza and cheesecake, occasionally. Coffee? Yes. CrossFit? No.
How Does Y7 Founder Sarah Levey Live a Nutritious Life?
If you had to name your healthy diet, what would you call it? The “It’s Okay to Eat the Things You Want Diet.” I don’t think you should feel bad for eating something that makes you happy.
What’s your go-to breakfast? Hard-boiled eggs.
Your go-to workday dinner? A starch, veg, and greens. (Yesterday I had whole wheat pasta with sauteed kale and tomatoes.)
What’s the one food you always have in your fridge? Ketchup.
The one food you’d never buy? Olives.
What do you eat before and after a workout? Depends on the time of day. I’m not big on shakes or anything like that. I will eat if I’m hungry.
Your favorite food indulgence? PIZZA AND CHEESECAKE.
Other than water, what do you sip regularly? Coffee.
How often do you exercise, and what’s your workout of choice? I try to do something active everyday, either yoga or spin.
Which workout would you NEVER do? CrossFit.
What’s your go-to tool for managing stress? Sleep, wine, and to-do lists.
How do you pamper yourself when you need it? Mani-pedi or a massage.
Do you have a favorite health gadget? The TheraGun is pretty cool. I’m not entirely sure of what it is but it’s basically a vibrating tool that gets deep into the muscles.
What’s your weirdest healthy habit? I take a lot of vitamins.
Which healthy habit do you wish you had more time for? Meditating.
Meditation or massage? Massage.
A hot shower or a soothing bath? Hot shower.
Almond butter or peanut butter? Peanut.
Coffee or tea? Coffee.
A long run outside or a dark spin class? Dark spin class.
