Fitness Star Melissa Wood Loves Cold Showers and Is Avocado-Obsessed

By Emma Stessman

You likely won’t catch Melissa Wood in a HIIT class.

The wellness coach and yoga teacher is the creator of the MWH method, an exercise program that draws inspiration from yoga and Pilates and is all about slow, controlled, muscle-fatiguing movements. (You know, it’s that kind of workout that makes you sore in muscles you didn’t even realize you had.)

Wood’s program and overall philosophy (she also shares plant-based recipes and lifestyle advice) is super popular, and the fact that the workouts “can be done from anywhere, anytime, and with no equipment required” is definitely part of the appeal.

In other words, considering she’s mom to two (insanely adorable) tots under the age of four, she knows what it’s like to fit healthy habits into a seriously busy life.

So, we sat down with the fit mama to get all the details about her Nutritious Life, which is filled with avocados (seriously, so many of them!), meditation, and more.

How Does Melissa Wood Live a Nutritious Life?

Your go-to breakfast? Celery juice followed by my spirulina smoothie.

Your go-to workday dinner? My quinoa stir-fry.

What’s the one food you always have in your fridge? Avocado (but not in my fridge!) without fail.

What do you eat before and after a workout? My spirulina smoothie before, and typically avocado toast or oatmeal after.

The snack you always have with you when traveling? Avocado… see a theme here?!

Other than water, what do you sip regularly? Iced green or back tea, almond matcha, and one almond milk latte a day.

How often do you exercise, and what’s your workout of choice? Three to five times a week now post-two babies, but I typically like to strive for five. I do my own workouts!

What’s your go-to tool for managing stress? Meditation.

How do you pamper yourself when you need it? Take an Epsom salt bath, light a candle, and get a massage.

What does it mean to you to “live consciously”? Being mindful about my footprint in the world and my relationship to self. How I show up for my family and everyone in my life.

What’s your weirdest healthy habit? At the end of my shower, I do a cold rinse and dance around like a psycho. It makes your skin/hair glow and boosts your energy like crazy.

Which healthy habit do you wish you had more time for? Meditation two times a day would be ideal.
