Who doesn’t love a great margarita? It’s the perfect refreshing, sweet-and-sour beverage for a hot summer day (or for Taco Tuesday, obviously).
But bad margaritas abound. Many are spiked with way too much sour mix and spoonfuls of sugar.
Oh, and you felt a little lazy and went for the mix? In Jose Cuervo’s version, high-fructose corn syrup is the first ingredient after water, and you’ll be sipping 24 grams of sugar in one cocktail. Not to mention the flavors and colors added. (What? You thought it was somehow naturally neon green even though it doesn’t contain a drop of lime juice?)
Don’t worry: We have the perfect solution. Meet three of our favorite margarita recipes.

Light & Spicy Margarita
The subtle sweetness comes from just a touch of agave, so you won’t have to worry about an inflammation-inducing sugar rush.
It’s super simple, but we recommend letting the tequila infuse with a jalapeño overnight. When you’re ready to enjoy, making the individual cocktails will just be a matter of shaking up the tequila and mix (your superior, delicious version) in a glass.
Margaritas are best enjoyed on hot, sunny days, and the fresh grapefruit juice adds to the tart lime flavor while making the drink even more refreshing.
This one also has a slight kick, thanks to a pinch of chili pepper and a few slices of jalapeño. Can’t you just taste the grilled fish tacos you’ll eat while sipping on it?
