Banana Spinach Turmeric Smoothie

By Catherine McCord, author of The Smoothie Project As soon as fall begins, I prep for that time of year when everyone seems to fall prey to cold and flu season, and I start reinforcing my immune system with tons of resistance-building foods. This smoothie is loaded with vitamins, antioxidants, and superfoods that kick your immune system into overdrive, improve your gut health, and even help you feel better if you’re a little under the weather.

Ingredients

½ banana, peeled
¼ -inch piece fresh turmeric, peeled and chopped, or ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric
2 tablespoons Greek yogurt, plain or vanilla
½ cup (65 g) mixed berries, fresh or frozen
1 handful spinach
1 dried date, pitted or 2 teaspoons honey for added sweetness, if desired
2 teaspoons hemp seeds
1 teaspoon bee pollen
1 tablespoon almond butter or nut butter of choice
1 crack black pepper
½ cup almond milk

Directions

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a blender.
  2. Blend until smooth.
WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE Most people don’t think of adding turmeric to their smoothies, but—OMG—once you do, you won’t go back. It adds antioxidants, obviously, but also a hit a flavor that will keep you coming back for more. This smoothie is also awesome with chia seeds, flax seeds, maca powder, protein powder, or just about any other add-in of your choice.
