Lori Harder’s Happiness Formula Involves Dancing and Dark Chocolate

By Emma Stessman

Lori Harder has more than a few claims to fame. She’s a fitness model, an author, and a go-to expert on self-love and mindfulness. Her most enviable achievement, though?

She’s totally got the whole happiness thing down pat.

Thankfully, she doesn’t just keep all that joy to herself. When asked how she spreads love, for instance, she says “every day in every way. For real, I try to do this in all I do, because it’s the easiest way to make yourself happy; by giving it away, even when people are jerks. Keep giving!”

Harder does so as creator of The Bliss Project (a women’s retreat), the host of the Earn Your Happy podcast, and most recently the author of A Tribe Called Bliss, a guide for finding yourself and your tribe by creating long-lasting friendships.

Obviously, we had to know all the ways she fuels her bliss… and we weren’t too surprised to find it involves plenty of feel-good foods and exercises. Find out more about her happiness formula, below.

How Does Lori Harder Live a Nutritious Life?

If you had to name your healthy diet, what would you call it? Why? I would call it The Energy Outcome diet because I try to think about how I’m going to feel after the food I choose. I am always looking to feel my best and usually that means eating about 80 percent clean and organic and avoiding sugar. I also know that for me, I have to leave 20 percent every day for some dark chocolate, pasta, champagne, extra nuts or even cheese! When I do this every day, I don’t get those old feelings of needing a cheat day anymore, because every day nothing is off limits. I choose food on how I want to feel, and I have the freedom to feel like crap just as much as I do to feel great! I want the most out of life so I eat to fuel that desire.

Your go-to workday lunch? I make an Isagenix shake every day for the last eight years unless I’m out to lunch or traveling!

Your go-to workday dinner? A big salad with beets, seeds, olives, salmon or chicken, and any other veggies you can name!

What’s the one food you always have in your fridge? Coconut milk and real butter.

The snack you always have with you when traveling? Almonds and beef jerky.

Your favorite food indulgence? Bread and more bread and rolls! Lol.

How often do you exercise, and what’s your workout of choice? Every day––I walk almost daily and lift three times a week. I also love SoulCycle.

Which workout would you NEVER do? I’m not a CrossFit fan simply because my joints hurt thinking about it.

How do you stay active outside the gym? I love to run, walk, and dance. We also love to hike as we live in California and have to take advantage of the epic hikes.

How do you pamper yourself when you need it? A massage, getting my nails done, meeting with friends for a girls dinner, a good restorative yoga class, or something like online shopping with a glass of champagne while watching old Sex and the City reruns.

Do you have a favorite health gadget? What is it and why? Just my headphones! I’ve never been a gadget person. I try not to track anything anymore and go off how I feel and look and my energy so I just focus on what actually makes me feel good instead of tracking numbers. This took me years to figure out, so tracking is important in the beginning.

What’s your weirdest healthy habit? Sometimes I eat cocoa powder off a spoon. I don’t recommend this to anyone––you can choke and it’s just weird.

Which healthy habit do you wish you had more time for? Dancing and deep meditation.
