Brilliant Female Entrepreneurs Share Their Number One Tip for Getting Ahead

Every day is a good day to kill it as a strong, smart woman, but today is a special one: It’s International Women’s Day.

This year’s theme is #PressforProgress, which organizers say is about “motivating and uniting friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive.” In other words, patriarchal norms are systemic and it’ll take a village (or, like, all of them) to truly shatter them.

But one easy place to start is to learn to value your own worth at work, bust through workplace stereotypes, and create the career you’ve always wanted. It won’t be easy, but we got some brilliant tips to help you get there, from wildly successful female entrepreneurs who have already changed the game in so many ways. You’ll be next.

Think big, and embrace failure. When we think big, we often get nervous about failure or doubt ourselves. When you accept that failure is growth (and may actually be a step to take you closer to your goals), fear can’t stop you. You are free to dream big and believe! So, there are no goals that are too big. Believe in yourself and embrace that it’s okay to fall flat because you can always stand up again and move forward.

Forgive yourself! We’re so hard on ourselves, whether it comes to our physicality, relationships, work, parenting, and more. We’re good enough and don’t have anything to prove. Do your best, be kind, and the rest will fall in place.

Own it. Know who you are at a core level, what you stand for, what your standards are, your self-worth, your success, your intelligence and own it. Own the fact that no one can take your power from you besides you—whether that’s letting your fear or your ego get in the way of your path. Having a firm grip on who you are and what you stand for is all you need.

It’s hard for people to accept a strong woman in a position of power. But I know that my intentions are good, my heart is in the right place, and I know what I want, I don’t need to apologize for who I am or what I want.

Embrace the power of the pass! When a job comes your way and it doesn’t feel right or the pay is not there, pass. If the brand [or company] wants to work with you enough they will find a way to figure out a good deal for both parties. Remember, at the time, passing might feel like the biggest mistake but in reality, it might have just saved you years of business heartache.
