You’ve probably seen pictures of the great mass of plastic that’s floating in the ocean somewhere between California and Hawaii right now. Dubbed the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” it clocks in at around 79,000 tons and is about three times the size of France (yikes!).
As if that wasn’t bad enough, estimates show that there’s more than 260,000 tons of plastic, overall, polluting the salty seas. It’s killing millions of marine animals every year and even making its way onto our plates through the seafood we eat (not really what you want to be thinking about while digging into your tuna salad sandwich).
So what can we do about this island-sized issue?
Well, if you haven’t already, you can start your total split with plastic. (Trust us, it’s the best breakup you’ll ever go through!) In the meantime, you can check out these healthy products from some super cool companies that are repurposing plastic that’s already floating around in the ocean.

4 Products Made With Recycled Ocean Plastic
1. Adidas UltraBOOST Parley Shoes
Adidas teamed up with Parley for the Oceans to make this line of practical running shoes. Each shoe is partially made with yarn that’s been derived from plastic from beaches and coasts before it can reach the ocean. One super cool thing about the shoes: every pair comes equipped with a chip that, when scanned on your phone, will tell you the “story of the shoe” and how it went from plastic bottles to a piece of functional running equipment. And judging from the positive reviews, the shoes are also super comfortable.

2. Captain Blankenship Beauty Products
This natural beauty brand was created with founder Jana Blankenship’s love for the ocean in mind. So it’s not surprising that they recently launched a handful of products packaged in bottles made from 100 percent recovered and recycled ocean plastic. The products, including Mer-Mane shampoo and conditioner and their sea mineral soaps will have you feeling like you just spent a day in the sea, while also doing good by it.

3. Method Ocean Plastic 2-in-1 Dish + Hand Soap
Before Captain Blankenship, Method was the first company to create a bottle made from ocean plastic. The packaging for the soap is made from a combination of plastic recovered from the beaches of Hawaii and other post-consumer recycled plastics. The blend gives the bottle a grey/black coloring, different from the typically clear bottles Method is known for, which shows how unique the product really is. While they’re not producing any new bottles at the moment, you can still find some on Amazon and Grove Collaborative.

4. Norton Point Sunglasses
This Martha’s Vineyard-based sunglass company wants you to “Sea Plastic Differently” (clever!). They currently have four styles of sunnies, with frames made from plastic materials collected off the coast of Haiti. The glasses come in neutral colors like black and white, so they’re perfect for every occasion, whether it be a day at the beach or an end-of-summer soirée. And on top of using ocean plastic to create their products, the company has committed to donating five percent of their net profits to ocean plastic research and clean-up practices. So you can protect those deep blue eyes and the deep blue sea at the same time.
