This month, we’re handing out our best tricks and treats—from guilt-free beer picks (yes, you read that right), how to pump iron with pumpkins (read that one right too), to cuddling with someone (not your cell!) at night—and came up with some great reasons to work these super-seasonal suggestions into your Nutritious Life.

Drink Up

In honor of Oktoberfest, let’s get down to beer basics. While this Munich-based festival is heavy on the booze, new studies show that beer (in moderation of course) might not be so bad after all. Research shows that silicon, an ingredient found in dark beer, promotes bone density by aiding in the absorption of calcium and minerals. Beer also contains polyphenols, the heart healthy antioxidant found in red wine.

NLT: It seems small waistlines have been on the mind of some major brewing companies
recently. Traditionally burdened with a bad rap, beer is making a come back with low-calorie
options. Go ahead, join the festivities! Indulge in one of these, guilt-free:

Budweiser Select 55-55 calories
MGD 63-64 calories
Guinness Draft-125 calories

Stress Less

Irritability, insomnia, anxiety oh my! We could go on about these classic signs of stress but surely you’ve felt them before. According to a study of nearly 2,000 people, those with the highest levels of stress were three times more likely to get stomach aches. Although the jury is still out on the exact nature of this relationship, the brain and stomach appear to share a strong neuronal connection. When your mind is uneasy, your stomach picks up on the bad vibes.

NLT: Pay attention to what your body is telling you and take a break. Research shows that vacation time, no matter how long or short, lowers blood pressure and aids in stress relief. Look up some last minute travel deals, or plan to visit a warm locale this winter. You’ll likely feel less stressed and be more productive at work knowing that a relaxing getaway lies ahead. (In the meantime, sip some ginger tea to soothe that stomach.)

Sleep Deep

Are you sleeping with your cell? A recent study by the Pew Research Center
found that around 83% of the millennial generation (people born after 1980,) sleep with their phones within reach. Keeping your cell phone on while you’re trying to get quality zzz’s may hinder your sleep routine. Additionally, answering emails and text messages once you’re already in bed can make falling asleep a more stressful experience.

NLT: Make the commitment to turn off your cell phone before you hit the pillow
and enjoy more peaceful wind-down time. Instead of counting on your phone to
wake you, stick to an alarm clock and give your body the rest it deserves.

Pamper Thyself

As you begin to embrace the crisp fall air, combat dry skin before it starts! Skin looses 25% more water at night than during the day, due to metabolic activity taking place underneath the surface while we’re asleep. Add the change in weather and windy days to the equation and your skin regimen will likely need a little adjustment. Don’t stress at the sight of dull or peeling skin, simply stay hydrated and find a moisturizer that feels right for your skin type and apply before bed.

NLT: Go ahead and give that gorgeous face a little extra attention. Feel rejuvenated and detoxified with a homemade face mask featuring the star ingredient, yup you guessed it, pumpkin! Try mixing pumpkin (canned or pureed), milk, and honey for a moisturizing face mask, or add a pinch of brown sugar for an exfoliating scrub.

Exercise Steady

Kettlebells have hit the workout scene as a new and innovative way to target specific areas of the body for muscle strength and flexibility. Gyms and personal trainers are embracing the new trend by centering workouts and cardio classes around them. Your living room can be the perfect place for Kettlebell training too! Shaped like a bowling ball with a round handle, Kettlebells come in different weights and sizes and can be purchased online, along with instructional DVDs and training tips.

NLT: In honor of Halloween be extra festive and try a Kettlebell workout using pumpkins!
Choose any size that works for you and get your workout on. Who would have thought a
holiday decoration could double as workout gear?

Sex Ed

Instead of toiling with ancient recipes to ward off the common cold, heat up your sex life for an extra boost of immunity. A recent study found that women who reported getting down and dirty at least 1-2 times a week had higher levels of the antibody immunoglobulin A, a defender against the common cold. Bonus: Spending time with loved ones and even pets has a similar antioxidant-boosting effect.

NLT: Go ahead, take the lead and don’t be shy – your health may depend on it! If your
partner wonders what’s up, tell ‘em your doc insisted (although we doubt you’ll hear
many complaints…).
