This month at Nutritious Life, we're thankful for the little things in life (like shinier hair and apple cider) that help us welcome November with a healthy outlook on life. Here are 8 ways to give back to our bodies, our minds, and our environment!

Stress Less:

Stress rears its ugly head disguised as anything from insomnia to straight up pain. Feel familiar? Think there's just no way you have the time (or the $$$) for a daily massage? Check out the Spoonk Rider Accupressure Mat, which claims to help release sleep- inducing endorphins, ease muscle tension, strengthen your immune system, and…drum roll please….slow down the aging process! The pressure from the spines of the mat may also facilitate the release of endorphins--those feel-good hormones we're always talking about--which double as natural pain-killers.

NLT: Regularity is key. Just like exercise, pencil those acupressure sessions into your schedule and stick to it! (At the very least, it's a great excuse to lay down and close your eyes for 15 minutes!)

Sleep Deep:

A swig of cherry juice before bedtime? Who knew? New CheriBundi Tart Cherry Juice is made from real pressed cherries, which naturally deliver a considerable dose of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin.  Studies show that melatonin helps to decrease the time it takes to fall asleep, and may also help you sleep for a longer period of time. Bonus: Cherries are an excellent source of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals–a lullaby for our ears! Each bottle of CheriBundi contains 50 cherries, so drink up for sweet dreams.

If D-I-Y is more your style, indulge in this decadent after dinner treat!

Dreamy Cherry Dessert Parfait
1/2 cup plain or vanilla nonfat yogurt
1/4 cup frozen dark sweet pitted cherries, thawed to room temp
2 teaspoons chopped pecans
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Place half of the yogurt in a glass. Layer on half of the cherries, then remaining yogurt
and cherries. Sprinkle with pecans and cinnamon.

Drink Up:

Surprise the bartender (and your date) the next time you head to the bar and ask for their finest hard apple cider.  Fun fact: Eight ounces of cider contains the same amount of those friendly cancer-fighting antioxidants found in a glass of red wine. Whether you'd prefer to escape from beer bloat or plain bored with cocktails, give hard apple cider a try!

NLT: If hard cider still seems too heavy for you, make your own "Sparkling" Hard Apple Cider. Simply add 1-2 oz all-natural apple juice to a glass of champagne or sparkling white wine and voila! Feeling a little more ambitious? Throw a sliced apple into the juicer and use that instead.

Exercise Steady:

Stuck in the office? Get moving!  A recent study from the NIH found that engaging in 4 workouts, 10 minutes a piece, produced the same health benefits as a full 40 minute workout session. So store free weights, a resistance band or a yoga mat in the office to sneak in short spurts of exercise. Lift weights while on the phone, take a quick breather for some stretching, and use those stairs instead of the elevator. You'll improve your overall workout time and decrease stress that builds up throughout the day.

NLT: We often overlook the smaller, but equally important areas of our body.
Sitting at your desk is a great time to target hot spots like your wrists, hips and
lower back. Check out these easy desk friendly exercises.

Pamper Thyself:

Cold weather can leave hair looking less than lustrous, but you can eat your way to beautiful hair! Believe it or not, what you do (and don't) put in your mouth can have a major effect on your mane. Nutrients such as biotin—the precursor to keratin—and selenium are essential for luscious locks. They help grow strong, healthy hair and maintain scalp health.

NLT: You may already get selenium from common foods, just not enough of it.
Major sources include mushrooms, shrimp, salmon, snapper, and halibut.
Amp up your intake by adding grilled shitake mushrooms to burgers and sandwiches
or treat yourself to a fancy shrimp cocktail!

Eat Empowered:

Thanksgiving doesn't have to mean overdoing it. You can enjoy this special day and feel good about your food choices with the right planning and quality ingredients. (Cranberry sauce without high fructose corn syrup is a good start!) To make sure guilt doesn't gobble you up, avoid frying, smothering with butter and of course, simply overeating. Listening to your body is key, especially on Turkey Day.

NLT: NLT: Stuffing is most often made with enough bread to feed the entire Mayflower.
Try this new and improved recipe that features Bulgur, one of our favorite grains
packed with protein, fiber, and anti-inflammatory power.

Your World:

The start of the hectic holiday season may not leave much time for regular visits to your local soup kitchen, so think outside the box. Perhaps this year, it's time to pay homage to the gift that simply never stops giving--your environment.  Start small by paying more attention to the amount of waste you create each day: Tote real silverware to work instead of plastic and reusable containers to pack lunches and snacks. These little changes can make a world of difference!

NLT: If you're hesitant to bring real silverware to work--or worried your kids won't
remember to return it--look for plant-based disposable cutlery, made of corn or potato
starch. Biodegradable means better for the environment!

Sex Ed:

Research shows that sex is less enjoyable when we're bogged down with pleasure-prohibiting thoughts. The key is to decrease activity in the left side of the brain--the part that has you running through your to-do list in your head. The next time you're thinking of dry cleaning and deadlines between the sheets, ask your partner for a massage first to help you tune out the busy bee and tune in the indulgence.

NLT: Need another way to beat that buzz from the left side of the brain?
Try taking a yoga class together—telling your partner that you'll become even
more flexible is great incentive!
