The holidays are approaching-fast! That doesn’t mean you have to stray from your Nutritious Life. Use November’s Nutritious Life tips to help you ward off stress, colds, and weight gain that often accompanies this time of year. Thanksgiving should be a time for inspiration and celebration. Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone, and enjoy this month’s Nutritious Life Tips!
Sleep Traveling for the holidays? The air pressure and lost hours of sleep may lead to jet lag, which can impair your health, mental acuity, and energy. If you’re planning on flying to see friends and family, try to workout for at least 45 minutes the day of your trip. Before flying, eat a complete "clean" balanced meal with adequate protein, stay away from sodium, and begin to hydrate the day before. On the flight, bring at least 2 portioned snacks, avoid a large meal, and alcohol. And remember, enjoy the time away!
Diet Thanksgiving is all about the turkey, as it should be! Commonly known for its sleep-inducing tryptophan, turkey also has a good amount of zinc, a mineral that is needed for proper immune function and helpful when it comes to avoiding colds. Don’t wait for the holiday to enjoy your turkey dinner, add it to your diet now, and give your immune system the boost it needs! Not a fan of turkey? Mushrooms, spinach, beef, and shrimp are also rich in zinc!
Pamper Has your skin been super sensitive recently? Having trouble calming redness and inflammation? Treat yourself to the Bean and Mushroom Calming Skin Mask featured in my new book, The 02 Diet, The Cutting Edge Antioxidant-Based Program That Will Make You Healthy, Thin and Beautiful. It’s so simple to whip up right in your kitchen! Using a food processor, puree 1/4 cup white beans with 2 teaspoons maitake mushrooms. Smooth the mask all over your face! The beans provide your skin with B vitamins, which help diminish the signs of aging, while the maitake mushrooms help treat rosacea and redness.
Exercise The transition to cold weather frequently discourages us from our regular exercise routines. Don’t let the drop in temperature take a toll on your workout! Bundle up and take a brisk walk outdoors, or go for a run. (Research proves that 20 minutes of daily outdoor exercise may help boost your mood and improve your motivation.)
Stress Spice up your soups and salads with a pinch of chili flakes to help brighten your mood! Chili’s have a compound called capsaicin, which triggers those feel-good endorphins that help put you into a better mood. The next time you’re in a funk, look no further than your spice rack… Add some chili flakes to your dish!
Personal Time This Thanksgiving, take a step back to recognize everything you’re blessed with, and help others in need. Go to www.foodbanknyc.org to find out how you can help feed the hungry this year. Whether it’s by donating an hour of your time to a food drive, or a canned good from your pantry, there are so many ways to do a good deed and make this year’s Thanksgiving that much more fruitful.
Fluids Prepare a cup of Celestial Seasonings Green Tea with a teaspoon of honey, and protect yourself from seasonal coughs and colds. The enzymes and amino acids in honey are powerful antibacterial agents that will help protect against certain viruses. Plus, honey is rich in a variety of skin-improving antioxidants, which help to regenerate damaged tissues and improve tone and elasticity.
